The Office of the General Counsel is the Road Commission for Oakland County’s (RCOC) in-house counsel providing legal advice, representation and services to the RCOC, its governing board, managing director, management, staff, committees, and other sub-entities.  The Office of the General Counsel is responsible for a wide range of areas, including:

Leads and manages the legal and risk management activities of the agency, including the department budget and necessary consideration for compliance, litigation and business process.
Provides legal advice to management, board members, and any employee who acts on behalf of the organization.
Maintains an in-depth understanding of how legal issues affect the RCOC and related interests and communicates the impact accordingly.
Coordinate internal corporate governance policies and manage the impact of external factors such as contractual matters, litigation, real property transactions, policies, procedures and regulatory matters.
Creates, develops and maintains relationships and associations based upon confidences, trust and respect to all.
Makes recommendations on strategic alliances by assembling a legal team of internal and external resources.
Demonstrates solid, well balanced judgment in all matters
Invokes professionalism, leadership, and integrity by their communication and actions.
Regular and predictable onsite job attendance is an essential function of this position.
Requires a daily schedule that supports RCOC hours of operation.

Special Experience/Education
           Ideal Candidate:

A Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school and professional license.
Minimum of 10 year of full time experience as a practicing attorney, preferably in a governmental setting.
A member in good standing of the State Bar of Michigan.
Demonstrated and tested leadership skill and ability
Extraordinary communication skills, including:
Proven experience in cultivating an earnest executive presence
Clear oral and written communication skill demonstrating confidence, trust and credibility
Be approachable, confident and thoughtful
A commitment to serving the agency and the public with integrity and professional diligence.
Awareness of governmental practices and operations is beneficial.
Valid Driver’s License; legal ability to work in the U.S.
