The Vice President for Legal Services and General Counsel reports to the Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer (CLO) of Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health and serves as the chief counsel of Jefferson Health New Jersey and Magee.  He/she will serve as the CLO’s primary representative to these divisions, and will have oversight of legal issues, regarding relevant hospital operations including medical staff issues, licensure/accreditation, graduate and undergraduate academic affiliations, New Jersey regulatory matters, and rehabilitation hospital regulatory standards. This individual will also support the CLO in governance matters for the campus Boards of Trustees and each of their subsidiaries and their respective committees.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Prepare and advise executive leadership on key legal issues, topics and regulatory changes and trends.
Work with the Deputy General Counsel in connection with administrative matters for the Office of Legal Affairs, including the design, functionality and management of corporate legal services at Jefferson Health New Jersey and Magee.
Transition, align and integrate the legal departments at Jefferson Health NJ and Magee into the system-wide legal department structure and triage the appropriate services to the Enterprise Office of Legal Affairs or Enterprise Assurance, Risk and Compliance offices.
Work closely with leadership to understand enterprise strategic initiatives and business needs and establish and influence appropriate legal considerations, risk analyses, and decision-making to assure consistency with enterprise strategic objectives.
Interact with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.

EDUCATIONAL/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

A law degree from an ABA accredited school and current admission to the Bars of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the State of New Jersey

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATION:

Licensed to Practice law in Pennsylvania and New Jersey; Member of the Supreme Courts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

15 years of experience as a healthcare attorney and at least 7 years as a deputy counsel of a multi-system health care system or equivalent responsibility.  Demonstrated ability to interact with executives, physician leaders and trustees. Experience representing rehabilitation hospitals a plus.
