Position Summary

The Chief Legal Officer will lead the corporate legal team responsible for all legal, compliance and regulatory affairs of Marqeta, both internationally and domestically. Reporting into the CEO, this extraordinary individual will be a key executive team member with responsibility for directing all activities within the legal team including legal counsel to all senior management. This person must possess stellar legal instincts as well as a strong initiative, excellent management and leadership skills, and strong business acumen. You will be heading up a top performing team whose goal is to be the industry’s best and build a reputation as a thought leader.

Primary Responsibilities:

Developing and leading corporate legal strategy to promote and protect the company's matters
Developing and leading all corporate compliance programs
Developing and leading all regulatory and policy programs
Overseeing delivery of legal services and resources to accomplish corporate goals, strategies, and priorities
Participating in the formulation of a general management policy as a member of the executive management team
Managing a team of corporate counsel and other members of the legal, compliance, and regulatory/policy department
Advises on legal aspects of the company’s financing, including assessing and advising on current and future business structures and legal entities
Serves as key lawyer/legal advisor on all major business transactions, including acquisitions, divestitures, and joint ventures
Apply effective risk management techniques and offer proactive advice on possible legal issues
Deal with complex matters with multiple stakeholders and forces
Oversees the selection, retention, management and evaluation of all outside counsel
Requirements:
Relevant experience of at least 15+ years legal and corporate counsel experience in a similar capacity
Significant in-house experience with a startup or technology company that has experienced remarkable scale
Direct relevant experience in expanding internationally
Executive-level poise, presence, credibility, analytical and influencing skills
Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, including presentation skills
Uniquely strong leadership skills. Experience managing a team of cross-functional team members in an in-house setting
Customer-focused and commercially aware executive, able to manage ambiguity and achieve results
Ability to anticipate legal issues or risks and to “see around the corner”
J.D. degree a must
Admitted to the State Bar of California
