We are looking for a General Counsel who will oversee all legal issues at Khan Academy, with a primary focus on managing our global privacy and data security program; other secondary responsibilities will include structuring agreements with strategic partners and providing overall legal guidance to the senior leadership team, with the possible assistance from external pro-bono partners.  Reporting into the CFO, the General Counsel will need to balance privacy & data security expertise with an in-depth understanding of Khan Academy in order to come up with solutions that best meet the needs of students, parents, teachers, and districts / schools.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish & manage Khan Academy’s global privacy and data security program to minimize risk and promote compliance with applicable laws & regulations in the US and abroad
  • Develop & maintain effective policies, procedures, & supporting documentation to demonstrate compliance
  • Build & maintain program for how we safely & securely handle personal information of our users both in the US and abroad
  • Advise product teams on how to address privacy & security requirements in the design of our products
  • Advise marketing & partnerships team on behavioral tracking and data sharing policies & practices
  • Stay on top of changes in privacy / data security laws & regulations, and proactively evaluate implications for Khan Academy & how to address
  • Engage with policy makers, regulatory authorities, & districts / schools on privacy issues
  • Lead incident management as needed, including identifying best practices & collaborating with internal stakeholders to resolve issues
  • Partner with business development team on negotiating & drafting strategic partnership agreements
  • Advise CEO, COO, and Senior Leadership team on key legal issues for the company

 

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience dealing with privacy, security, & data protection issues in a technology environment
  • Extensive knowledge and experience analyzing and applying federal & state laws related to privacy and data protection such as COPPA.  Working knowledge of international privacy laws
  • Outstanding strategic thinking & business acumen with the ability to balance principles & data along with judgment to solve for what’s best for Khan Academy & our users
  • Demonstrated leadership & creative problem solver with a proven track record of leading cross-functional teams to tackle challenging problems in an innovative manner
  • A willingness to get into the details, roll up your sleeves, & help the team get the work done; manage various pro-bono partners on many of the general legal issues Khan Academy faces
  • Exceptional written, verbal, & interpersonal communication skills, including helping non-experts understand applicable regulations & requirements and influencing cross-functional leaders
  • Deep experience structuring & negotiating partnership agreements
  • Bias for action & desire to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Collaborative & team-oriented working style
  • Passion for education & a desire to make a difference
  • JD and technology experience required. Degrees and/or certificates in Data Security and/or Privacy preferred. International experience a plus
