Guideline is looking for a General Counsel to lead our growing Legal & Compliance team, reporting directly to the CEO.

What will you be working on?

We need a business-driven General Counsel who’s hands-on in the day-to-day with the ability to execute at a leadership level. Our highly regulated industry leaves little room for mistakes nevertheless, innovation is still key. This role will be part of making strategic operational decisions, provide compliance guidance for product development, and lead a high-performance team.

Draft and negotiate Guideline’s core commercial contracts, including product and marketing partnership agreements

Lead all required compliance audits

Build collaborative relationships with Guideline’s department heads, providing legal advice that supports accurate and speedy decision making and mitigates risk

Scale the Legal & Compliance function thoughtfully through a combination of outside counsel and internal hires

Manage outside counsel relationships, including corporate, ERISA, and RIA/SEC counsel

Ensure Guideline’s continued compliance with all applicable laws and regulations

Partner with the Product & Engineering teams to ensure regulatory compliance and minimize legal risk as we develop new, innovative retirement products

The team

Legal & Compliance is a team of 8 serving as strategic advisors to Guideline’s business units. Ensuring products and services are developed in compliance with regulatory requirements; manage risk as Guideline scales to become a leading retirement plan provider; monitor plan operational compliance; and represent Guideline in legal and regulatory matters.

Qualifications

Must have

7+ years experience in big law and/or in-house

Broad corporate legal experience, including commercial contract negotiation, product counseling, privacy and information security, compliance, and corporate governance

Partnership mentality - you’re excited to work cross-functionally and contribute to the success of other teams and Guideline as a whole

Experience in highly regulated environments like finance or healthcare

Direct experience managing a team

J.D. from a top-tier, accredited institution

Admitted to the California Bar in good standing, or eligible to register as in-house counsel with the California Bar

Nice to have

Familiarity with both SEC compliance for Registered Investment Advisors and ERISA

Experience at a fast-growing startup
