The General Counsel is responsible for leading corporate, strategic and tactical legal initiatives. The GC partners with and provide senior leadership with effective advice on company strategies and their implementation. She/he manages the in-house legal responsibilities, obtain and oversee the work of outside counsel. The GC is directly involved in complex business transactions, including negotiating critical contracts.

Essential Responsibilities

Participates in the definition and development of corporate policies, procedures and programs and provides continuing counsel and guidance on legal matters and on legal implications of all matters.

Serves as key attorney/legal advisor on all major business transactions.

Assumes ultimate responsibility for ensuring that the company conducts its business in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Oversees the selection, retention, management and evaluation of all outside counsel.

Assess and provide advice in connection with the legal aspects of the company’s financing.

Assess and provide advice in connection with the current and future business structures and legal entities.

Attract, develop, direct, motivate and drive performance of the legal team.

Keep abreast of legislative changes, specifically on the cutting edge of SEC rulings related to FinTech, PropTech etc.

Provide guidance to leadership related to innovative legal strategies to drive PeerStreet ahead of its competition.

Prepare and drive OKR/KPIs for a high performing legal team that support the direction of the business.

Act as the legal visionary, with respect to operational scale, enabling PeerStreet’s legal function and output to grow with the business.

Requirements

Minimum 10 years legal experience, including a mix of in-house experience and large law firm experience.

JD degree from an ABA accredited law school.

MA or BSc in Business Administration is a bonus.

Member in good standing in at least one State Bar, preferably California.

Understands and is familiar with regulatory / real estate compliance.

Experience managing a legal team (attorneys, paralegals etc.)

Must be a strategic thinker who possesses the confidence and composure required to effectively communicate with stakeholders across the organization.

Proven legal experience in the real estate finance or mortgage lending (Single Family Residential, Non-QM etc.) space.

Overall broad legal knowledge (corporate law, litigation, labor law, etc).

In-depth understanding of how legal issues affect organizations.

High degree of professional ethics and integrity.

Excellent judgment and analytical skills.

Customer service oriented with first class interpersonal and communication skills.

Ability to anticipate and address legal issues or fraud risks.
