Reporting directly to the SFE CEO, the General Counsel will assist in providing general legal services on behalf of SFE.  Primary responsibilities will include supporting the company in the management of contracts by reviewing requests for proposals (RFPs) from school districts, drafting and negotiating contracts and amendments, and ensuring compliance by SFE at the local, state and federal levels.  The General Counsel will also be called upon to provide legal support in the areas of governance, policy development, human resources, purchasing, leases and asset management, intellectual property, and litigation matters.

Working directly with the company’s senior leadership team, business development staff and area directors; draft, review and revise contracts, and provide legal guidance.

Oversee and serve as liaison with outside counsel in both litigation and non-litigation matters.

Field a wide range of legal inquiries from departments company-wide from external entities.

Conduct legal research and analysis and draft legal memoranda.

Keep current on developments in law and regulation at the federal, state and local level pertaining to K-12 education institutions.

Draft correspondence and reports on behalf of SFE.

Attend specified management, board and client meetings.

Oversee the legal functions for SFE (and subsidiary OL, in the absence of its General Counsel).

Such other related duties as may arise from time to time.

Qualifications
Member in good standing of the Arizona State Bar required; Navajo Nation State Bar desirable.

Minimum of two years of legal experience preferred, including experience in high compliance such as education or healthcare. Litigation experience a plus.

High level of proficiency in transactional work experience with contracts and procurement is highly desirable.

Experience in compliance policies, procedures and implementation.

Preference to applicants with experience in, and affinity for, training managers on HR policies and legal/contract issues.

Flexibility and ability to handle multiple projects, both large and small, simultaneously.

Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a high-pressured environment.

Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to emergency situations and to meet deadlines – even after hours.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to take initiative when appropriate.

Ability to communicate, work cooperatively and interact comfortably with a diverse community and multiple constituencies including senior administrators, staff, faculty, students, trustees, external professionals and vendors.

Excellent oral and written communications skills.

Highest level of research and analytical skills.

Sound judgment and high degree of integrity and discretion.

Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Google Apps, Westlaw Next, Excel, and general web-based social media and research tools.
