The General Counsel is responsible for protecting and advancing the legal interests of the American Dental Association (ADA) by providing advice and counsel to the ADA Board of Trustees, House of Delegates (HOD), and executive management on the risks, strategies and legal implications of ADA policies, programs, decisions and activities.  This position acts as ADA Compliance Officer, member of the Pension Committee, and member of the Senior Staff Management Team.  This position oversees enterprise risk management and ensures ADA compliance with legal and regulatory requirements; oversees Legal Staff; manages litigation and relationships with outside counsel; assists in promoting proper governance; and supports Councils, Commissions, and HOD.

Minimum Qualifications:

 Juris Doctorate degree
Minimum of 15 years’ experience in/with a corporate, government or law firm environment, complex governance models or internal political issues, collaborative decision-making, and complicated legal issues.
Must have excellent communication, management, report writing, problem-solving, and facilitation skills.
Knowledge of issues relating to various areas of the law, including association law, antitrust, litigation, contracts, data privacy, employment law, intellectual property, health and insurance, and regulatory compliance
Ability to build trust and establish effective working relationships with co-workers and volunteers, and motivate employees/colleagues.
Ability to communicate openly and honestly with various contingents within the organization collegially, and exercise reasoned judgment in addressing significant issues.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Highly Desirable Skills:

Experience with associations, charitable foundations, and healthcare organizations
Strong sense of loyalty
Member in good standing of the Illinois State Bar
