University of Maryland Global Campus seeks a Vice President & General Counsel to lead our Office of Legal Affairs. Reporting to the SVP and Chief Financial Officer, the General Counsel (GC) will lead a team of in-house attorneys supporting a dynamic and innovative University environment. The GC will lead the team in providing legal advice and recommendations on matters related to higher education including student matters, human resources including collective bargaining, real estate and procurement, state, military and global compliance/regulations, accreditation, Title IV, as well as key business transactions and venture opportunities.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

Lead the global delivery of expert legal advice to the University’s leadership in a timely, responsive, and proactive manner
Work closely with the University regarding Enterprise Risk Management, Compliance, and Privacy
Serve as legal advisor on operations and business transactions and manage the impact of external factors on these matters
Maintain a culture of collaboration inside and outside of the Office of Legal Affairs that supports compliance for stateside and overseas programs, while anticipating and working to mitigate risk in emerging areas of potential vulnerability
Oversee the legal side of internal investigations, formal inquiries, and legal training across the enterprise
Understand when to and appropriately leverage external counsel when needed
Perform other job-related duties as assigned
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: An earned Juris Doctorate from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning and at least 10 years of experience performing legal work including at least five (5) years leading a team of experienced attorneys performing related work; experience working directly with/for a state University; a track record of success leading and continuing to develop a high performing team; as well as excellent oral and written communication skills. Must be currently licensed to practice law in the state of Maryland at the time of application.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Corporate transactions, venture financing, higher education, intellectual property, human resources, licensing and technology agreements; drafting and reviewing complex federal government contracts and grants; experience developing and/or implementing a legal compliance function, as well as the global delivery of legal advice and services. Possesses the gravitas and confidence to quickly gain the credibility and respect of both internal and external key stakeholders.
