The Chief Legal Officer will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer of
Essentia Health and will be responsible for the management and oversight of all legal
services to the health system and will work as a member of and collaboratively with
Essentia’s senior leadership team. This attorney will provide advice and counsel on legal
matters affecting Essentia utilizing a business-minded approach while complying with
applicable legal and ethical standards. The Chief Legal Officer will manage the members of
Essentia’s Legal Department and will serve as the Corporate Secretary of the Board providing
guidance on all governance matters for the health system. This attorney will be a mature
leader with excellent legal skills, including a strong understanding of healthcare operations
and the complex and ever-changing healthcare landscape.

This position will be located in Duluth, MN.
Education Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have at least 15 years of healthcare law
experience, gained through a combination of major law firm and in-house experience as a
general counsel or senior managing in-house counsel. The successful candidate will have
demonstrated leadership skills, strong management experience and a proven track record of
effectively handling a company’s legal function, as well as a solid understanding of
representing integrated health systems. Healthcare industry experience is strongly
preferred. A combination of top tier law firm and in-house experience in a healthcare
corporation is a clear advantage. Experience managing attorneys and other legal
professionals in an in-house legal department is also desired.

Licensure/Certification Qualifications:
Admission to a State Bar of any jurisdiction in the United States and
licensed to practice in Minnesota (or admitted to the Minnesota Bar within a reasonable time
following the commencement of the position).
