Position Summary | The General Counsel (GC) serves as the principal lawyer for the University and reports to the Chancellor. The GC provides legal advice, strategy and counsel to the Chancellor, the Board of Trustees (BOT), the administration, faculty, staff, and students on matters involving or affecting the University. The GC analyzes laws, regulations, proposed legislation, and policies to facilitate compliance by the University, which includes keeping the campus community informed about legal risks and their management. The GC serves as liaison on legal issues with the Office of the President, the BOT, the Attorney General’s Office, and other entities as needed. The GC also is responsible for hiring and supervising the legal and other professional staff of the Office of University Counsel and secures and manages outside legal services for the University as appropriate. |
Educational Requirements | A law degree from an accredited law school and at least fifteen years of legal experience required. |
Qualifications and Experience | Qualifications of the successful candidate should include: a law degree from an accredited law school and at least 15 years of legal experience required; must have excellent communication skills; an appreciation for and interest in public higher education, and a commitment to a demanding legal practice; previous legal experience in a major research university and health care system with strong professional schools is not essential but is preferred; previous legal experience in representing public entities is not essential but preferred. The ability to interact with a variety of stakeholders in a dynamic setting in a manner that facilitates consensus and alignment is an important skill in this position. |
