KARL STORZ Endoscopy-America, Inc. (KSEA), is an affiliate of KARL STORZ SE & Co. KG (KST), an international leader for more than 70 years in reusable endoscope technology, encompassing all endoscopic specialties. Based in Tuttlingen, Germany, KST is a family-owned company that designs, engineers, manufactures, and markets all its products with an emphasis on visionary design, precision craftsmanship and clinical effectiveness.
Headquartered in El Segundo, California, KSEA is responsible for all U.S. distribution and sales of endoscopes, instruments, imaging systems, electromechanical devices and OR1® integration technologies for operating rooms. KSEA also offers customers 24-hour access to customer service and technical support, and a team of professional service technicians provide regional on-site support.
ROLE OVERVIEW
KARL STORZ is currently seeking a General Counsel to join the Global Legal and Compliance department.
This position is based in El Segundo, CA and will have a formal reporting structure into the Tuttlingen, Germany-based VP of Legal & Compliance and a dotted line to the El Segundo, California-based KSEA President and COO.
The primary responsibility of this position is to provide KSEA with expert and strategic legal advice in all legal matters for the Americas; give and manage accurate and timely counsel in a variety of legal topics.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Advise, guidance and counsel on legal matters and on legal implications of all matters;
Evaluate and weigh multiple inputs and impacts of any decision or course of action;
Oversee the selection, retention, management and evaluation of all outside counsel;
Providing guidance on business and legal risks to internal teams as needed;
Working with multiple internal and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with company contracting policies as well as corporate policies, procedures and programs;
Reviewing, drafting and negotiating commercial contracts and according agreements;
Supervisory responsibilities
Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
Our successful candidate will have excellent oral and written English language business communication skills; be extremely organized; as well as be a proactive and resourceful individual.
Additional requirements include, but are not limited to:
5 years, minimum, of providing in-house generalist legal counsel on the following areas of law, including but not limited to intellectual property, compliance, product liability, contracts, employment, antitrust, privacy, anti-corruption, medical device law, product liability, corporate law, litigation and M&A;
CA bar license required;
Ability to do 5-15% overnight domestic and international travel;
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and projects with excellent follow-through to meet deadlines;
Independent judgment, tact, diplomacy and professionalism required;
Exceptional organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills;
Strong presentation and written and verbal communication skills;
Passion for business integrity and impeccable integrity track record;
Ability to work in a team-oriented environment;
Ability to work with outside counsel and interact with senior management;
Ability to demonstrate a high degree of organizational skills and professionalism;
Ability to maintain confidentiality;
High level of familiarity with standard office software and the ability to learn new job-related systems and software.
Preferred but not required:
Work experience in a medical device, healthcare or related setting;
Excellent written and spoken German language business communication skills.
