The Team:

The Enterprise Risk Management team at Simple is responsible for ensuring that Simple maximizes shareholder value by managing business risks. We evaluate and know our business’ inherent risks, and independently advise on controls to protect shareholder value. The team includes experts in a variety of risk management fields, and works collaboratively across the business.

The General Counsel, Simple’s chief legal officer, is responsible for managing legal risks and is a senior leader of the Enterprise Risk Management team. The General Counsel reports dually to the parent company’s General Counsel and to the Simple Sr. Director of Enterprise Risk Management.

You are curious about complex legal and regulatory matters, and have a point of view on what it means to make people feel confident with their money. You bring a point of view about what fairness in banking means, and want bring an ethical and strong point of view to your work.

What You’ll Do All Day:

As the General Counsel you will be responsible for providing strategic counsel with respect to various legal matters, as well as advising to the business and managing legal risks, including intellectual property, employment, privacy, financial industry regulations, and corporate governance. You bring strong business and legal acumen to Simple, formulating management policies and advising on key decisions.

The role provides direct legal services to Simple, coordinates legal services and the management of legal risks with Simple’s partner bank/parent and oversees legal services provided by external law firms.

You’ll do this through:

Advising the business with regards to financial industry and privacy regulations, particularly those relating to the digital delivery of financial products.
Managing the development and delivery of various agreements and disclosures.
Establishing enterprise risk management processes, including risk assessment and reporting.
Reviewing, drafting, and editing business contracts.
Providing legal advice regarding risks relating to new products and scaling of the business.
Acting as Simple’s primary employment law attorney, advising on labor and employment law.
Managing Simple’s intellectual property assets, working with external counsel to protect trademarks and patents when appropriate.
Coordinating with BBVA regulatory relations to monitor regulatory changes.
Developing administrative procedures and implementing training when appropriate.
Managing legal spending budget.
We’d Like To See:

A minimum of 8 years’ relevant legal experience.  Preferred experience includes working in the financial services industry (bank regulatory focus), and/or experience with privacy or intellectual property matters.
A J.D. or higher from an accredited law school.
Bar Membership in at least one state (Oregon preferred).
Experience partnering with and advising a Board of Directors.
Deep understanding of employment law in the state of Oregon. Experience with employment law practices across the U.S. is a plus.
Knowledge of privacy principles. Professional certification as a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) is desired.
Ability to research and understand legal and business issues quickly.
Sound judgment in a time-sensitive, dynamic and fast paced complex global environment.
Excellent communication (written and oral) skills, including strong presentation and executive presence.
